بھیرہ جس کی نشاۃ الثانیہ کا بیڑہ کرنل ر زاہد ممتاز صاحب اٹھا کر چل رہے ہیں یہ کیا ہے، یہ ایک عشق ہے ایک جنون ہے جو صرف اس شخص کو ہو سکتا ہے جو دھرتی ماں کا سمجھتا ہے اور جانتا ہے اور دھرتی اسے اون کرتی ہے. یہ دو طرفہ محبت ہے جو کرنل صاحب کو بھیرہ سے ہے اور بھیرہ کو کرنل صاحب سے ہے. میں اگر یہ کہوں کہ بھیرہ ملتان کی طرح انڈس سولائزیشن کا لونگ سٹی ہے تو اس میں مبالغہ نہیں ہو گا. لیکن جو بھیرہ آج ہے پرانا بھیرہ اس سے زرا فاصلہ پر تھا جو ابھی تک کسی سر جان مارشل کی راہ دیکھ رہا ہے کیا خبر یہ بھیرہ ہی ہو جہاں سے سندھ کی تہذیب کا عقدہ کھل جائے اور وہ سکرپٹ مل جائے جس سے ہم سندھ تہذیب کو جان سکیں. یہ ہزاروں سال پرانی بات ہے لیکن جو بھیرہ پچھلے ایک ہزار سال سے والڈ سٹی کے طور پر موجود ہے اس کے ورثے کو بھیرہ ڈاٹ آرگ نے ایک طرح سے محفوظ کرنے کی جاندار کوشش کی ہے. بھیرہ کی شناخت اس کا تکثیری سماج ہے جہاں کبھی ہندو، سکھ، مسلمان، بدھ اور جین ملکر شانت سے رہتے تھے آج کے بھیرہ کو بھیرہ شریف تو کہا جاتا ہے مگر یہ شرافت اس روز رخصت ہو گئی تھی جب ہم نے دھرم کی بنیاد پر ایک دوسرے کا خون کیا تھا. بھیرہ جہاں جہلم کے پانیوں نے سکندر اعظم کو بھاگتے دیکھا تھا نادر شاہ درانی کو کے لوٹے گئے خزانوں کو دریا برد ہوتے دیکھا تھا آج وہی پانی انسانیت کو دریا برد ہوتے دیکھ رہے ہیں. بابر کو جو سرور یہاں کشتی کی سیر سے ملتا تھا وہ سرور اب کسی خانقاہ سے نہیں ملتا. کرنل زاہد ممتاز اسی بھیرہ کی کھوج میں نکلے ہوئے ہیں اور یہاں کا ہر پتھر اٹھا کر دیکھ رہے ہیں وہ بھیرہ پھولوں کا سہرہ کہاں کھو گیا ہے

شب معراج،شب برات اور پھر رمضان المبارک ،مسلسل قرب الہی کے حصول کا ذریعہ ہیں ۔قمری مہینہ کے آٹھویں ماہ کی پندرہ شب کو بڑی اہمیت حاصل شرعی روایات اور عقائد کیا کہتے ہیں، لیکن اب یہ روایت دو لحاظ سے سماجی تہوار بن گئی ہے ۔ایک عبادت کی رات دوسرا زندگی کی تلخیوں میں خوشی کے لمحات ۔ بھیرہ ایک تاریخی شہر ہے اور اپنی تاریخی کلچرل روایات کا امین بھی ۔ شب برات کو جہاں رات مسجدیں رکوع و سجود اور تلاوت و درود سے آباد ہوتی ہیں ،وہیں گلی محلوں ،چوراہوں اور شہر کے مرکزی دروازوں پر پٹاخوں سے فضا گونج اٹھتی ہے ۔ بھیرہ میں دھماکہ دار گولے اور شرنائیان (شہنائیاں )عام بنتی اور بکتی تھیں۔ایک محلہ دروازہ چک والا کے پاس تھا ،اب ماضی کا قصہ ہے ۔ شہر میں اس رات عصر کے قریب بچے پٹاخے چلانا شروع کردیئے تھے جبکہ بڑی عمر کے لڑکے شام کے بعد مختلف آتش بازی کے سامان گروہ در گروہ ،ہم مذاق دوستوں کے ساتھ نکل آتے ۔ آتش بازی کے سامان میں پٹاخے ،انار ، پٹاس، پھلجھڑیاں، جہاز، شامل ہوتے۔ اور دل کھول کر آتش بازی ہوتی۔ شہر کی فضا پٹاخون کی اواز اور بارود کی مہک ،دھوان سے متاثر ہوتی۔ فانوس ،جسے مقامی زبان میں پھٹڈونس کہا جاتا تھا ، مٹی کے دئیے ،مٹی کی سوراخ دار ڈولی اور اس میں موم بتی جلا کر چھوٹے بچے اپنے گھروں اور محلہ میں چکر لگاتے تھے۔ “ڈھیم ڈھیم سورے”کی تکرار بلند آواز سے کرتے رہتے۔ نماز مغرب سے قدرے پہلے بڑے قبرستانون کا رخ کرتے ،اپنے پیاروں کیلئے فاتحہ خوانی کرتے اور ان کی قبور پر موم بتی جلاتے ،اگر بتی کی مہک سے سارا قبرستان مہک اٹھتا ۔ بعض منچلے موقعہ کی تاڑ میں ہوتے اور موم بتیاں اتار کر رفوچکر ہو جاتے ،بدقسمتی سے جو ہتھے چڑ جاتا پھر تھوڑی بہت نصیحت لے کر جاتا۔ رات گھروں کی چھت پر چراغاں کیا جاتا ۔زیادہ تر موم بتیاں لگائی جاتی تھیں۔اس شب کو میٹھی کھانے کی چیز تیار کی جاتی ۔حلوہ اور کھیر بالعموم پسند کی جاتی ۔ارواح کے نام اپنے بزرگوں کیلئے ایصال ثواب کیلئے پلیٹ صدقہ کی جاتی ،عزیز واقارب اور پڑوسیوں کو بابرکت رات کا تحفہ دیا جاتا ۔ مساجد میں نوافل اور ذکر و اذکار کی محافل ہوتیں ،سحری کا اہتمام اہل محلہ یا کوئی صاحب دل کرتا ،زیادہ تر بزرگ روزہ رکھتے بعض نوجوان بھی روزہ رکھتے ۔یہ تب کی بات جب عبادت کو ترجیح دی جاتی تھی، کوئی بحث مباحثہ نہ تھا، جائز ہے یا ناجائز ۔رب العالمین کے قرب کیلئے جو موقعہ ملے ،اس سے روکنا گویا بندے کو رب سے دور کرنا ہے ۔ ۔ بھیرہ میں شب برات کو ایک دوسرے گھر جا کر “راضی رہویے “کہتے یا دروازہ پر کھڑے کھڑے آواز لگاتے ۔یہ شب برات سے منسوب اس نظریہ کی وجہ سے تھی کہ آج کی رات قسمت ،عمر رزق وغیرہ کے فیصلے ہوتے ہیں۔ بھیرہ اپنے سماجی، مذہبی تہواروں کا امین ہے اور یہی اس کی پہچان ہے۔ (صاحبزادہ ابرار احمد بگوی جامعہ بگویہ بھیر

ایک محاورہ تھا یہ بات فلان تندور پر پہنچاؤ ۔یعنی اس آدمی کو بات بتا دو وہ بات جلد ہر گھر ہرجگہ پھیل جائیگی ۔یہ تندور واقعی دنیا جہان کی باتیں پھیلانے میں اہم سماجی کردار
ادا کرتے تھے
ذیادہ تر تندور خواتین آپریٹ کرتی تھیں اور روٹیاں بھی خواتین اور بچے ھی لگوانے جاتے تھے خاص بات یہ بھی تھی کہ اگر کوئی مریض محلے میں سخت بیمار ھوتا اور ایسے لگتا کہ یہ آخری سانسوں پہ ھے تو اس دن محلے کا تندور از راہ ھمدردی بند کر دیا جاتا اور محلے والوں کو معلوم ہو جاتا کہ کوئی مریض سخت بیمار ھے ۔اس طرح لوگ بیمار پرسی کے لیئے گھر پہنچ جاتے
My father L.Kundan Lal Bhatia was a vakil in Bhera and our house was right across the masjid in Haji gulab mohalla.My father had a special liking for tandoori roti.When the court would close in the evening,he would walk to Laaloo wala darwaza,pass over the mound on the right and enter the small street towards Haji Gulab mohalla.There was a tandoori in that street.The owner of the tandoori was a muslim lady named Aalo.My father would buy rotis from the tandoori and hide them in the interior pockets of his coat.He did not want my Grandma to see these rotis as she did not like them.My sisters and myself would eat these tandoori rotis in the dark in the company of my father an enjoy them.

بھیرہ ایک تاریخی اور قدیمی شہر ہے ۔دریاۓ جہلم کے کنارے آباد اس شہر نے مختلف تہذیبوں ، اور ادوار کو دیکھا ان سے واسطہ پڑا ۔ ان کا بھیرہ کی زبان و لہجہ ، معاشرت اور معیشت پر گہرے اثرات مرتب ہوئے ۔نامور کاریگر ، ماہرین فن ،علمی سکالرز و علماء نے جنم لیا اور اپنا اور اپنے شہر کی شہرت کو دوام بخشا ۔
بھیرہ کی سوغات بہت ہیں ۔ان میں پھینیاں اپنا ایک مخصوص ذائقہ ،لذت کی حامل اور معروف ہیں ۔ان کے بنانے کے لئے محنت اور مہارت درکار ہے ۔اس کے کاریگر مخصوص ہوتے ہیں جو میدہ ،گھی اور نمک سے تیار کرتے ہیں ۔ میدہ گوندھنا ہی ایک محنت طلب کام ہے ۔اور اس سے لچھے دار پیڑے تیار کرنا وقت اور دقت اور مہارت کے متقاضی ہیں ۔ایک پیڑا سے 100سے130تک کھینچ کھینچ کر سویوں کی مانند تاریں بناکر ٹکیہ تیار ہوتی ہے جو بعد ازاں روٹی کی شکل اختیار کرتی ہے ۔گھی میں تلائی کےبعد اہل ذوق ، لطف و ذائقہ کے دلدادہ دودھ میں ملا کر کھاتے ہیں ۔
پھھینیاں عید کی خاص ڈش ہے ۔اس کے علاؤہ ناشتہ میں بھی استعمال ہوتی ہیں ۔ تحفہ اور سوغات کے طور پر دور و نزدیک لوگ لے جاتے ہیں ۔ یہ بھیرہ کی سفیر بن کر تعارف کا باعث بنتی ہیں ۔ اگرچہ مختلف شہروں میں اب پھینیاں تیار ہونے لگی ہیں مگر جو بات بھیرہ کی پھینیوں کی ہے ، اس کا جواب نہیں ۔۔۔۔

شہر کومتعارف کروایا ہے، بھیرہ میں گزرے ایام اور دیگر روایات کی یادیں ابرار احمد بگوی کے آرٹیکل سے تازہ ہوگئیں لیکن سب سے اچھی تحریر حافظ فضل کریم صاحب کے متعلق لگی جو مسجد کے نیچے دکان پر لکڑی کی کنگھیاں بناتے اور قرآن پاک بھی پڑھاتے تھے ، حافظ عبد الخالق مرحوم کا تذکرہ بھی کرنا ضروری سمجھتا ہوں جو ہماری گلی میں واقع سکول کے ساتھ شیشے کے قدیم ٹوٹے برتنوں کو بڑی مہارت سے جوڑتے تھے آج بھی بعض نوادرات انکے جوڑے ہوئے برتنوں کی صورت میں میرے گھر محفوظ ہیں ، جزاک اللہ خیرا کثیرا
Bhera needs to review and rebuild its cottage industry. This can be done by having a meeting with members of the Municipality and Artisans and provide them the tools to make the products. You have the chance to make Bhera productive.

For me Bhera is ” piya ka dais. ” I visited Bhera first time in 1988 with a year old son Omer Piracha in my Lap. Though I never had the opportunity to live there for a longer time but what I saw in those times and what I heard from my father in law Col. ME Piracha is always treasured. I’ll love to share all those valuable memories on this website. Thanks to Col. Zahid Mumtaz who provided this great forum to express ourselves and relive those precious times.
Great effort, a category of ‘archives’ and a category of ‘collections and artifacts’ with people of Bhera can be a good platform to share with others. Add a category of ‘Burrarian Mounds’ and related history to create awareness of ancient history of Bhera. Best wishes.

I liked the creation of Bhera in New Delhi by a Hindu family that originated in Bhera and migrated to New Delhi after partition in 1947. Their youngster must have not seen Bhera but are intoxicated with the love of Bhera.

Good morning Zahid Sahab. Today is Baisakhi Day. All Hindu families of Bhera used to take a dip in river Jhelum on this auspicious day and my father used to do volunteering duties to save people from drowning in deep water territories of the river.
Nice history and culture of Bhera.
People are also have unique and different thoughts.i am amazed to see your love for Bhera.
I have the honor to make first documentary on Bhera for PTV. Later, I produced more documentaries but still a lot to be done. Bhera, a walled city of 8 gates, is no doubt a heaven for photo and video graphers. City has its own culture, history, heritage and colours. Bhera needs to be revive and tourism hub. I can assure Bhera will never disappoint the tourists. Here, comments section has limits of words, but if you visit , you will realize that words are less to describe Bhera. Long live Bhera, long live Pakistan.
Bhera.org is impressive and gives so much information. I still remember that how Zahid Mumtaz used to bring people in Bhera a decade ago to show Bhera’s heritage.

Video of Dr.Prem Naath Dua drives us down to the golden era of Bhera. I too have heard a number of stories about this great city which really are mesmerising.The way things were managed in thise days seems unreal. How simply dr. Prem spoke in his particular dialect but love for Bhera dripped from every word. I am touched. Farooq Paracha sahib stayed lost in his past for a long time after listening to it.

Very interesting. The peculiar accent of the Bhera language prevails . I found no change in accent what I witnessed in my adolescent life in Bhera. He seems a great patriot of Bhera. I feel the Hindu community was more rich and advanced than the Muslim community in Bhera. I have enjoyed this video tremendously.

I spent my childhood in Bhera a place I love to belong. Did my matric from Government High School Bhera. Lot of memories of those good old days. Must mention here Jumma Prayer at Shershah Suri Masjid. Remember Annual conference where Ulema delivered lectures to enlighten our knowledge. Bugvi family is truly an asset for this city. I have been deeply impressed with the personal memories of Bhera city by Allama Prof Nazir MA Eng ,ex Principal Govt Inter College Bhera .Looking at his career and vertical rise in education and society ,it is amazing and highly commended..
I am a contemporary of Allama and originally belong to Bhera . I was born in Bhera on 30 Nov 1944 .My father Mian Fazl ur Rahman (Bismil) was a teacher .He was sort of self made like Allama .After Matric , he served as primary class teacher and privately passed BA and then joined Teacher’s Training College Lahore and got BT degree. He taught most of his active life in Govt High School Bhera .
I remember, Prof Allama was a class junior to me in Govt High School Bhera. I matriculated in 1960 and Allama in 1961. Allama was a favourite student of my father also.
I am astonished with his sharp memory and his achievements in life. I wish all youngsters of Bhera to follow his foot steps.
So far as I am concerned , I did my FSc pre Engg from T.I.College Rabwah in 1962 and graduated in Civil Engg from West Pakistan Univ of Engg and Tech Lahore. As an engineer , I have been a rolling stone and worked in four provinces of Pakistan and in Capital City Islamabad and Sultanate of Oman . I retired as G M National Engineering Services (NESPAK) and presently I am in Stockholm Sweden.

Thanks for sharing the photos. I was only four when our family left Bhera. We used to go from the circular road to the railway station Bhera through Mohalla Pirachgan by Tonga. I remember the train going to Malikwal, Sargodha, to Lahore. They must restore the historic station, and ride to Malikwal for fun.

Sad. They should have just cut the branches that were close to the electric wires, which they normally do to trees close to the electric wires. Mismanaged by the local Wapda office and the mosque authorities.

Ten years have passed, and they didn’t plant another tree as a replacement. These days quality trees are available, whose growth is slow but remain green throughout the year.

Very well written, but how sad we are not preserving old buildings and such like mementoes.
Recently in Campbellpur, they demolished the old Raees Khana, to what end, I fail to understand.

From 1962 to 1966 and even after my route by railway was Bhera to Malakwal, Malakwal to Lala Musa and Lala Musa to Lahore .
This was a very comfortable journey
In school time, many students from Hazurpur would come daily to attend classes in Govt High School , Bhera generally travel without a ticket.

To find out the history and cultural heritage of Bhera is my hobby. I am happy that my son , Sheikh Mustafa Mumtaz who is Germany , daughter, Silwat Mumtaz who is Australia/Dubai , and granddaughter , Enaya Mumtaz , who is Saudi Arabia are helping me in maintaining and updating the website, bhera.org. My experties in computer handling is poor. Basically, it is a reference website . My aim is to upload all the available material pertaining to Bhera on his website. At present it has about 5500 pictures of Bhera, number of audios / videos and English and Urdu articles. Its a good reference website for any resercher on Bhera.I have told my children and grandchildren to continue the website, bhera.org after me. They have promised.
What an effort , how priceless this would be for succeeding generations living there knowing the past and also for those who have departed from Bhera for ever …

بھیرہ کی یادگار ثقافتی یادیں۔ ” مگھ” بھیرہ تاریخی شہر ہے۔ اس کی تہذیب، کلچر اور گلی محلوں کی زندگی بھی دلچسپ رہی ہے ۔a تعمیراتی حسن اپنی جگہ مگر انسانی صحت، ضروریات کا ہر پہلوسے تعمیرات میں خیال رکھا جاتا تھا تنگ گلیاں اور چھوٹے چھوٹے تنگ مکان ۔۔ ہوا ،روشنی کے بغیر زمانہ قدیم کے قید خانہ سے کم نہ ہوتے اگر ان میں مگھ جیسی سہولت موجود نہ ہوتی۔ چھت مین لوہے کے سریا /راڈ سے سنگل یا ڈبل مگھ بناے جاتے تھے۔ جو اب بھی بعض مکانات میں کہیں کہیں نظر آتے ہیں نچلی منزل سے اوپر نہ صرف بھاری سامان منتقل کرنے میں آسانی ہوتی بلکہ ہر وقت تازہ ہوا اور روشنی ،کسی حد تک دھوپ کا انتظام رہتا ۔ مگھ زیادہ تر دو منزلہ سہ منزلہ مکانات میں اہتمام سے بناے جاتے۔بارش کی صورت میں ان پر ٹاٹ یا جستی چادر ڈال دی جاتی۔

“چھکا ” لوہے کے تاروں سے بنا گھونسلہ نما پنجرہ کو چھکا کہا جاتا ہے ۔ بھیرہ میں دو منزلہ سہ منزلہ مکانات کے مکین چھکا کی اہمیت سے آگاہ اور سہولت سے آرام کی زندگی گزارتے۔ پہلی یا دوسری منزل کی کھڑکی سے لٹکتا ہوا یہ چھکا ایک رسی /ڈوری کی مدد سے ہوا میں میں لہراتا گھومتا گلی میں خوشیاں اور آسانیاں لاتا ۔ کھڑکی میں کھڑی خواتین رسی ہاتھوں میں پکڑے سبزی/سودا سلف خرید کرتی۔ بھاوتاو ہوتا ،اور چھکا کے ذریعہ پیسے نیچے بھیجے جاتے۔ ٹوکری میں سودا لئے مرد /خواتین اکثر فروختگی کیلئے سامان سر پر رکھے آوازیں لگاتے اتے۔ سبزیاں زیادہ تر قریبی گاؤں کی خواتین لاتی تھیں۔ پہلی یا دوسری منزل سے نیچے آنا کسی وجہ سے مشکل ہوتا تو یہ چھکا مشکل آسان کو دیتا ۔ چھکا لٹکایا، سودا اوپر کھینچ لیا جاتا ۔ چھکا ہی میں پیسے رکھ دیئے ،یوں اعتماد کے ساتھ یہ سلسلہ جاری رہتا۔ پرانی روایات ختم ہوتی جارہی ہیں اور ثقافت کے یہ سادہ ،خوبصورت پہلو ہم بھولتے جا رہے ہیں۔شاید ہی اب بھیرہ میں چھکا کا استعمال ہوتا ہو اب مارکیٹ، پلازہ اورa بازار جانا ہی ثقافت ہے ،جہاں باہمی رواداری ،دوستی اور ہمدردی کی کوئی اہمیت نہیں۔ تاریخی شہر اپنی ثقافتی خوبیوں اور خوبصورتی سے محروم ہوتے جا رہے ہیں۔(صاحبزادہ ابرار احمد بگوی )

I am happy for the history and evoluti on of this sacred tree.I have visited the site many times when I was studying in Chirichog primary school and have collected and tasted the bairs.I also used to bring these sweet bairs for my sisters.I love the place.
